A root canal treatment is for a severely decayed tooth where the nerves in the pulp have become infected and painful. The contents of the pulp – the nerves and blood vessels – are removed, which makes the tooth non-vital and brings the infection under control. Over time the treated tooth becomes brittle and usually needs a crown to reinforce it.
Steps in a root canal treatment
The tooth is accessed and the pulp in the pulp chamber and root canals is removed. X-rays determine the proper length to the apices of the roots. The canal walls are carefully filed and rinsed with a disinfecting solution, the tooth is dressed with antiseptic, and a temporary filling is placed.
Once there are no more signs or symptoms, the root canals are filled with inert gutta percha, and the pulp chamber and tooth are sealed with a strong filling. A crown is usually recommended afterwards.
