Poor alignment of teeth is called ‘malocclusion’. Crowded teeth are prone to decay and are harder for the dentist to restore. It can also lead to periodontal disease and abnormal premature wear of the teeth.
Types available
Conventional metal brackets are the most economical option for aligning teeth. They are now made smaller, so they are less visible and more comfortable.
Silver brackets – tied with nodules, available in a choice of colours.
Passive ligation brackets – allow more movement of the wires within the bracket slots and may be indicated for certain cases.
Ceramic brackets – a more esthetic alternative to silver brackets, though costlier and more difficult to remove.
Aligners – clear braces made of a series of plastic trays that guide tooth movement. Generally more expensive, as the trays are fabricated for each stage and require consistent patient compliance.
Retainers
The Hawley retainer holds the teeth in position after braces are removed, allowing them to settle into their new positions. Skipping retainer wear can cause the alignment to relapse. Patients should clean retainers after meals and wear them as prescribed. Other retainer types are available based on individual needs.
