 As tooth whitening involves chemicals such as Carbamide peroxide or Hydrogen Peroxide and side effects such as tooth sensitivity and gum irritation can occur, it is advisable to seek a dental consultation first to determine suitability and take any precautions such as covering up any exposed roots, treating active cavities.  Under the dentist supervision, sensitive gels containing potassium nitrate or sodium fluoride may be dispensed.  

Over the counter whitening products may or may not work depending on the contents and the patient. It is advisable to follow the instructions and not modify the treatment by increasing the time for eg .

Note: Tooth whitening last for a period of time depending on patient’s lifestyle. Top up with the gel using existing trays are usually necessary. Bleaching has no effect on crowns and bridges and implants so the dentist needs to unify the color of the teeth.
