Night Guard
A night guard (also called mouth guard )is a custom made acrylic splint that protects the teeth against night clenching and grinding.
As the patient is asleep and unaware of his or her jaw movements and force, this can result in considerable damage to the teeth and supporting structures resulting in tooth wear, abfraction cavities, sensitive teeth and pain in the joints and muscles as well as headaches.
This protective wear varies in thickness: from 2 to 3mm for softguard to ensure comfort or dual laminated (soft interior, hard exterior) is available in 1.8mm and 2.5mm thickness. It may be fitted over your upper or lower teeth.
Care of the night guard
It should be cleaned and brush regularly to prevent the accumulation of bacteria and tartar deposits. They should also be checked regularly to assess for damage and replaced.
